Travel Security Tips and Resources

Intelligence

As travel begins to increase, organizations and global security directors need to be prepared for employees to return to destinations for the first time in a year or more.

UnitedHealthcare Global supports organizations and employees through a suite of assistance, security and intelligence resources to help prepare, protect and respond to medical and security risks around the world.

Pre-Travel Preparations

Before traveling to a foreign city or country, consider a pre-travel assessment of the destination for any medical and/or security threats. Awareness of potential risks ahead of time can help organizations implement mitigations to help reduce the risk to travelers.

Consider the following as part of a pre-travel review:

  • How long has it been since your organization has had a traveler in the destination?
  • Do you have recent intelligence about the threats in locations where travelers will go?

  • Have new threats moved into those areas where they were not before?
  • Do travelers know what the internal meeting rules and guidelines are for their organization?
  • Have travelers checked the guildeines of the organizations they plan to visit?

Location Safety

While many organizations may have preferred travel service providers and facilities, travelers can become vulnerable if lodging, transportation and/or medical access is not reliable. To help determine the safety of a location:
  • Review the current status of providers
  • Confirm preferred hotels are still operating and if any brand, management or owner changes have occurred that could impact traveler safety.
  • Verify the status of preferred transportation providers to confirm they are still operating. UnitedHealthcare Global may be able to help you supplement your list of providers in certain locations.
  • Verify access to, and availability of quality, local medical providers for travelers in case of a medical emergency, or illness.

Travel restrictions and regulations

International travel, while a great experience, can quickly become difficult if a traveler does not understand how to navigate the entry regulations, travel restrictions and requirement for a destination.

Some things to keep in mind are:

  • Understand the specific traveler health/medical insurance requirements to enter each country
    • Do travelers have a way to access the latest medical and vaccine requirements for that location?
    • Do travelers  way to get this information quickly?
  • If a traveler is impacted, verify there are resources to help make changes to their trip or provide access to local assistance
  • Ensure the organization has a way to post or provide new information for travelers before or during their assignment.
